In hindsight, I have no clue how I even survived childhood. I still think my mom wanted something horrible to happen to me so my dad would be devastated & she could more convincingly play the part of the poor, put-upon, martyr parent. She cared more about her image than she did her own children.

Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
That's usually in hindsight? And I said it wasn't obviously insane to them , not that it would pencil out in the end. Can also just be an asymmetric bet - relatively small outlay with low chance of working, but massive upside if it does, such that it's still positive expected value. But mostly, I think all these armcha…

Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
To be fair, people will say many of those deaths are due to the evacuation rather than the meltdown, and they’ll say the evacuation was overblown — too _much_ regulation. However, I think you’re right that these can still be attributed to the meltdown, since the evacuations were undertaken to avoid the difficult-to-pre…

Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
The federalist papers make it pretty clear the intention was not that everyone should vote. The idea of active citizens being the ones who vote is everywhere in Republicanism, whether you look at the early French Republic and their restrictions on the national guard, to constitutionalism in England, or the early Americ…

    What Sun got wrong
Dell’s innovation to the computer industry was build to order, selling computers direct, and later online in short streamlining the buying process. IBM, Sun, Digital, and SGI we’re at a whole different level, and they were at that level because of their capabilities. They could’ve have potentially changed the game (lik…

Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
Great job with this project, I bet there are VFP apps still running or even DOS FP apps. This takes me back to the first commercial software i ever worked on around 19 years ago, it was an accounting software written in Visual FoxPro. It's a super easy language to get started with programming and the fact that you can …

Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
Not really. All of the Navier-Stokes options in the Clay Institute formulation of the prize are real problems of significant interest. The history of this particular problem is of finding specific conditions under which we can get something to work that turn out not to generalize in ways that people don’t expect eg iir…

    What Sun got wrong
It's easier to see in hindsight but servers have eaten a lot of macro economic headwinds. 1999 and 2002 correspond roughly to telecom and dotcom bubbles popping. So open source operating systems were also pulled up into these positions through a lot of work and by the early 2000s it was kind of obvious this was the way…

Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
No, a remarkably farsighted policy that prevented PRC from having to deal with additional 200m-400m subsistent farmers. If anything it wasn't done sooner/aggressive enough. Like you can literally wipe away 200-400m from PRC button quantile and PRC would be net better off due to increase per capita resources and wealth.…

The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art (2024)
I used to have a ViewSonic PC CRT that went up to 2048x1536. Sadly my family didn't realize the worth and tossed it out along with a bunch of other CRTs many years ago. In hindsight we should've tested them all and kept the nicest ones.

You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
And in more recent games where there is Nuclear Gandhi it's because of that legend. If you write a game in a decent language where such a thing won't happen by mistake you can still have it be present on purpose and in some cases that even fits the game's lore. Random glitches are confusing and bad. Falling off the wor…

Lawsuit says Anthropic, OpenAI and others made illegal agreement on AI slowdown
Surely there are enough experts that think there's a risk that at least considering corrective action will not retrospectively look silly? (Except perhaps with hindsight bias.) They may well be wrong, but I'm not sure you can dismiss them so easily. And the fact it is a prisoner dilemma problem doesn't mean it's unsolv…

How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
    > I remember the paper proving that hallucinations could never be fully solved back in 2024 The papers that use the halting problem or the Gödel's incompleteness theorem to prove something about LLMs are dime a dozen. AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
I feel like this is hindsight bias, and in a different scenario you'd be saying "not hosting your infrastructure in a DC without AWS level diesel backup contracts is even better".
